Overcoming employment barriers

Barriers to finding and retaining employment are well documented—child care, transportation, education and inflexible work hours can complicate the task of finding and keeping a job.Research has also identified housing, poor mental or physical health, substance abuse and a criminal history as impediments to obtaining employment. When we asked employment counselors and program managers from around the state about the employment barriers they commonly see in their work with clients, they said:

  • A lack of education or credentials
  • A lack of transportation
  • A lack of child care or daycare

  • Connect participants to training or education programs
  • Engage people in career counseling and exploration
  • Refer individuals to other resources or agencies
