Introduction to Human Services
Monday, September 23, 2024 to Thursday, December 5, 2024

This fully in-person course will be held at Duluth Adult Education (325 W 1st St) and will include hands-on training in: 

  • Serving diverse populations through culturally sensitive practice 
  • Intake and interviewing for program or grant eligibility
  • Assessment of client needs 
  • Building rapport with clients and co-workers
  • Documentation, including case noting
  • Understanding privacy practices, professional ethics, and boundaries
  • Email and phone etiquette, time management, and remote working

Students will have the opportunity, during class time, to tour area social and human service providers and hear from staff in a variety of roles to learn about local resources and network. Every participant will work with a Career Specialist to develop a plan to find or progress their employment after graduation.

Participating employers include CHUM, Life House, Northwood Children’s Services, Center for Alcohol and Drug Treatment, Safe Haven and others. 

How to Participate

This class will serve adults at least 18 years old who are not enrolled in any K-12 school, who identify as part of one or more of the following target populations: 

  • Individuals of color 
  • Individuals lacking stable housing 
  • Individuals with a criminal record 
  • Individuals without a high school diploma or equivalent 
  • Individuals living with disabilities 
  • Individuals who have been unemployed for 26 or more of the past 52 weeks 
  • Individuals at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Guideline

While there are no pre-requisite courses that need to be taken before participating in this training, a reading and math assessment will be required for any participants who don’t already have an associate or bachelor’s degree. Guidelines are that individuals have a reading level of 7th grade or higher; however, individuals testing below a 7th grade level can be considered based on their ability to work with an instructor for additional assistance.

Outcomes

Participants who successfully complete this course will receive an Introduction to Human Services Certificate from Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College (FDLTCC), 3 college credits for The Helping Process (a course within FDLTCC’s Human Services AAS degree program), connections to area employers, and assistance with job search.
