U.S. Marine Corps Veteran Kim was an unemployed homemaker and mother of two who had been out of the workforce for four years. Her last job was as a Food Service Worker at a local elementary school. Kim had to resign from the position because she could no longer be on her feet all day. However, Kim needed to return to the workforce as soon as possible to earn an income to support herself but didn’t know what she wanted to do.

Kim reached out to Denise Myhrberg, Workforce Development Specialist at CareerForce Worthington for help with her resume. Denise worked with Kim, then referred her to Rebecca Kaas, Veterans Employment Representative at CareerForce in Marshall. Kim said, “Rebecca was understanding and patient. She listened to me, was compassionate about my situation, and took my preferences and limitations into consideration.”

Rebecca showed Kim that her skills and abilities as a homemaker could be a match for several different careers and helped Kim use her experience to cover the 4-year gap on her resume.  “Rebecca was able to take something mundane and make it look impressive. That made me feel more confident when filling out job applications. Rebecca being a Vet herself, was able to adjust to my situation and help me overcome my limitations.”

Kim applied for four jobs while enrolled in the Minnesota Veterans Employment Program, including a full-time Paraprofessional position at a local high school. She interviewed for the position on August 1st, 2023. The interview went so well that Kim was offered the job the next day. Kim was relieved that she will be able to support herself and take care of her children. “Getting the Paraprofessional position also enables me to take care of my granddaughter. My work schedule gives me the flexibility to pick her up and take her to daycare.”

Kim’s advice to other Veterans reentering the workforce: “Don’t be afraid to ask for help and set goals.”
