Jobs in Demand: First-Line Supervisors of Office and Administrative Support Workers

Have you worked in an office and administrative support occupation and you’re ready to move up into a supervisory position? If so, you may be ready to become a First-Line Supervisor of Office and Administrative Support Workers. This occupational title encompasses many different types of supervisory roles, with examples including Accounts Payable Supervisor, Administrative Supervisor, Customer Service Manager, Office Coordinator, Office Supervisor, and Staff Services Manager. As this occupation does cover so many different areas, and is found in every industry sector, it is naturally a very large-employing occupation. In fact, with just over 20,000 jobs in Minnesota, this occupation is the state’s 24th largest-employing occupation.

First-Line Supervisors of Office and Administrative Support Workers directly supervise and coordinate the activities of clerical and administrative support workers. Specific tasks for such workers will depend on the company or organization, but some examples include providing employees with guidance in handling difficult or complex problems, discussing job performance with employees, preparing and issuing work schedules and project deadlines, interviewing and selecting new workers, leading employee training, and consulting with managers. The types of technology skills needed will also vary on the type of company or organization, but generally First-Line Supervisors of Office and Administrative Support Workers will work with PCs and various software, which may include accounting, calendar and scheduling, human resources, spreadsheet, and word processing software.

DEED’s Employment Outlook data does show total employment for First-Line Supervisors of Office and Administrative Support Workers contracting by 1.3% between 2018 and 2028. This relatively small contraction is overwhelming offset by the anticipated need for more than 8,500 such workers to fill jobs left vacant due to labor market exits. In fact, as recently as the fourth quarter of 2020, DEED’s Job Vacancy Survey showed that there were 850 job openings across Minnesota for First-Line Supervisors of Office and Administrative Support Workers. This represents the largest number of such openings over the past decade.

Half of all First-Line Supervisors of Office and Administrative Support Workers earn between $24.29 per hour and $37.13 per hour. The median hourly wage for this occupation in Minnesota was $30.35. The highest median hourly wages for First-Line Supervisors of Office and Administrative Support Workers are found in Natural Resources and Mining ($39.92), Public Administration ($34.85), Information ($33.30), Manufacturing ($32.32), and Professional and Business Services ($32.31). DEED’s Occupations in Demand data shows that a high school diploma or equivalent is typically required to become a First-Line Supervisors of Office and Administrative Support Workers, with employers typically requiring some related work experience.
