The Information sector comprises establishments engaged in the following processes: (a) producing and distributing information and cultural products, (b) providing the means to transmit or distribute these products as well as data or communications, and (c) processing data. The main components of this sector are motion picture and sound recording industries; publishing industries, including software publishing; broadcasting and content providers; telecommunications industries; computing infrastructure providers, data processing, Web hosting, and related services; and Web search portals, libraries, archives, and other information services.

Information Technology Industry Trends

In 2022, there were about 6,250 establishments providing just under 49,000 jobs in the Information industry, with a payroll of $3.6 billion dollars. Average annual wages were just over $74,000 in 2022, which was about $4,500 above the average across all industries.
The largest subsector was Publishing Industries (which includes Newspapers), with 19,700 jobs; followed by Telecommunications with 9,500 jobs and Internet Service Providers, Web Search Portals & Data Processing Services with 7,800 jobs.
The Information industry had been losing jobs in Minnesota since 2012, slicing 8,300 jobs over the past 10 years, but gained nearly 2,100 jobs back in the past 2 years.
Information firms reported just under 1,300 job vacancies in 2022, as employers struggled to find workers to fill open jobs.
According to DEED’s long-term projections, the Information industry is expected to add about 600 jobs over the next decade, a 1.4% rate of growth. Several occupations in demand in Information are expected to see growth in the future as well as demand from replacement openings as existing workers retire. Most jobs in Information require postsecondary education and work experience.
